An art
workshop brought me to New Mexico for the first time. I had taken a perspective course at
Parsons School of Design in New York City, and met a fine art instructor. He decided to
conduct some workshops in Santa Fe and advised all of his current students to attend. I
had always wanted to see the Southwest and decided to go. The rest is history. The
workshop was in August and by January, I was a New Mexico resident! I have been furthering my schooling in art, and have been painting commissions of animals, and some people. I have always enjoyed the outdoors, and have had my own horses for more than 35 years. The horses have been a natural subject for my paintings, and as a result of attending many horse events, I |
have gathered a wealth of reference material for additional paintings. I was
afraid that I would run out of ideas, but now I see that that will never happen. The
landscapes that surround the horses are so beautiful here in New Mexico that they too call
out to be painted. I prefer to paint the everyday scenes of life here, rather than the
spectacular. I have been told numerous times that my landscapes evoke a peaceful feeling
and that my animal portraits capture the essence of the animal. Hearing that is worth as
much as the payment for the piece. As a student of realist art, my art courses have been carefully chosen to provide me with the art education most useful to me. I have had the good fortune of having some very valuable art instruction from two knowledgeable instructors since moving here; Gary Faigin of the Academy of Realist Art, now known as the Seattle Academy of Fine Art, and Michael McGuire, a local Santa Fe artist known for his beautiful Santa Fe area landscapes. Both are accomplished artists and derive income from their art as well as from their teaching. Michael McGuire has most recently been instrumental in helping me to reach my current level of achievement. My off hours are devoted to riding my two Arabian horses in the mountains around Santa Fe. I belong to the Back Country Horsemen of New Mexico, (BCHNM), a volunteer organization that helps the public land management agencies like the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, etc, to maintain the trails in wilderness areas. We are part of a national organization, the Back Country Horsemen of America, (BCHA), that is 14,000 members strong. We also assist the agencies to plan for continued use of the public lands by horsemen and women. I am involved on three levels, at the local, state and national level. On the state and national level, I have made presentations to federal agencies on behalf of the BCHNM and BCHA regarding our ability to assist in their management duties. My two interests are intertwined, since I get much of my reference material for my paintings from my rides. |
